With the latest developments occurring on Lake Wilson Road in Elm Elm, the old Mitchell School, near Dunn’s Crossroads can now be seen very nicely. I spent the first 33 years of my life living less than a couple hundred feet away from the structure, but I had no idea it was there because it was overgrown by the wilderness. However construction and tree removal is underway in that area, allowing full view of the building. I do not know what the intention is or if they’re planning to tear it down, but at the moment it can be seen directly from Lake Wilson Road.
I am hopeful that the new owner of that property will preserve it. Mitchell was not built with Rosenwald funds, but is the finest example of early 20th c. African-American schools remaining in the county.
