Timothy Bowden (1902-1945).

In the 1920 census of Wilson, Wilson County: Texas-born laborer John Sanchas, 49, wife Mary, 39, and children Hattie, 21, Willie, 19, Timothy, 17, Herbert, 14, and John Jr., 11; all described as black. [Hattie, Willie, Timothy, and Herbert were Hattie’s children and carried the surname Bowden.]

On 26 March 1925, Timothy Bowden, 22, of Wilson, married Annie May Pitt, 19, of Wilson. Sam Allen, “minister of A.M.E. Zion connection,” performed the ceremony at his home on Robeson Street in the presence of Georgia Ward, Fannie Allen, and Cardain Allen.

In the 1930 census of Wilson, Wilson County: at 307 Finch Street, Timothy Battle [Bowden], 27, chauffeur; wife Annie, 24; children William, 7, Timothy Jr., 5, Mary E., 4, Hurbert, 3, and Charlie, 1; mother-in-law Sallie White, 38, widow.

In the 1940 census of Wilson, Wilson County: at 528 East Nash, Grover Black, 50, dairy bottle washer; wife Lucinda, 36, laundress; children Harry, 19, grocery delivery boy Grover Jr., 11, and Pearline, 5; Oscar Dixon, 37, house cleaner, and wife Turthina, 35; Timothy Bowden, 37, servant; Jack Best, 32, servant; and John Roberson, 32, street department laborer.

Timothy Bowden registered for the World War II draft in Wilson County in 1942. Per his registration card, he was born 14 June 1902 in Wilson; lived at 539 East Nash Street; his contact was Willie Rufus Bowden of the same address; and he worked for W.W. Harrell, 202 West Nash.

Timothy Bowden died 18 March 1945 in Wilson. Per his death certificate, he was born 14 June 1902 to Mary Ellen Adams of Wilson County; was married to Annie Mae Bowden; lived at 413 East Green; and worked as a chauffeur.

The Sanchas-Bowden family fights to save their house.

On 22 September 1924, John Sanchas, his wife Mary Adams Bowden Sanchas, and her sons Timothy and Willie Bowden mortgaged their house on Finch Street to secure payment of a $150 loan from William Adams. The Sanchas-Bowden family paid off the loan, the mortgage deed was void. If they defaulted, the house would be sold at public auction.

A note stamped across the document noted that the mortgage and note had been satisfied as of November 1925.

In March 1928, John and Mary Sanchas took out another mortgage on their house. This time, however, they defaulted, and trustee D.S. Boykin advertised a public sale in March 1931. However, as late as 1937, Sanchas appears in published tax lists as owner of a lot on Finch Street.

In the 1870 census of Lower Conetoe township, Edgecombe County, N.C.:  Gaib Bowden, 23, Daniel Wiggins, 25, Albert Lovett, 19, Orphan Knight, 23, and Richard Suggs, 19, farm laborers.

On 18 April 1875, Gabriel Bowden, 26, married Anne Ruff, 24, in Wilson.

In the 1880 census of Wilson, Wilson County: Sarah Jackson, 21; brother-in-law Gabriel Bowden, 40, brother-in-law, laborer; sister Anna, 32, cook; nephews Columbus, 11, house servant, and James, 9; son B.F. Jackson, 6; mother Vinus Ruff, 52; and boarder Whitehurst Wiswould, 64, laborer.

Gabel Bowden died 17 January 1911 in Wilson. Per his death certificate, he was 71 years old; was born in Edgecombe County; was a widower; lived at 410 Green Street; worked as a common laborer; and was buried in Wilson [probably, Oakdale Cemetery.]
