  1. Regarding Mr. M.M. Daniels mentioned in this article, Mr. Milton M. Daniels was my School Principal at Elvie St. Elementary School in Wilson, NC from 1958-1965.

Mr. Daniels really did live out the statement that “he believed in the innate worth of every child”. I was one of those children from Manchester St. , which was a dirt road at that time, who lived in a 4 room (not 4 bedrooms) tin roof wooden house with both my parents and 5 other siblings. However, Mr. Daniels nurtured what God and our parents had put on the inside of us as his students. He would even visit our homes , despite where we lived.

Beginning in just the 7th grade, I was chosen to work in his office and was also allowed to “tend ” to the teachers classes when they had to go to a teacher’s meeting. I had a job in the cafeteria during my lunch break which allowed me to get free lunch which was a tremendous help to my parents. He used to talk with us as children, always asking how we were doing, while making sure that we stayed involved in the life of the school.

Because he believed in me and nurtured my abilities , this later propelled me to go on and also become a teacher and a principal. Furthermore, because I count every life experience as divine intervention, I attribute that my becoming a Safety Patrol Student Officer , at age 10 at Elvie St. School , aided me in retiring as a University Dean of Students.

I have much gratitude for all GREAT educators who believe in the power of children becoming.

THANK YOU, Dr. Milton M. Daniels. May God continue to bless your legacy and your lineage.
