Rocky Branch United Church of Christ, founded in 1870, is one of the oldest African-American churches in Wilson County. The church was the hub of its southwest Wilson County community, and other institutions grew up around it. Rocky Blue Lodge #56, Prince Hall Masons, was chartered before 1910 and is still active. Though the church likely conducted an informal school from its earliest days, Wilson County Board of Education constructed Rocky Branch School with Rosenwald and community funds in 1917. As with other county schools, home demonstration, farmer, and 4-H clubs were informally affiliated with the school and, by 1946, the church sponsored a Boy Scout troop.
