Lydia Bledsoe Hunter posted her first comment on Black Wide-Awake in December 2017. Descended from Armstrongs and Bullocks who migrated from Wilson County to Arkansas in the late 1800s, she has been one of my most active readers, liking, commenting, and sharing photos of her Exoduster family.
I was surprised and saddened this weekend to open a text message revealing the news of her passing. My deepest condolences go to her family as they mourn their tremendous loss. Mrs. Hunter always reminded me of the reach of Black Wide-Awake and its capacity to restore connections sundered more than 130 years. May she rest in peace.

My condolences to the family. May you find peace and comfort during this difficult time 🙏🏽 Rest in Love Sweet Lydia 🕊
Rest peacefully, Mrs. Lydia Marie Bledsoe Hunter. 🕊️💜 I never had the privilege of meeting you in person or hearing your voice, but through your efforts to preserve and reconnect our family history, you still touched my life. It was through you that I was connected with Tamela, and that connection has grown into one that feels like regular family today.
As a fellow genealogist, historian, and custodian of our family’s story, I have an even greater appreciation now for the photographs, memories, connections, and knowledge you shared while you were here. Your contributions to the Armstrong, Bullock, Moore, Bynum, and Scarborough history will continue to speak for generations.
This is why I believe so deeply in giving people their flowers while they can still smell them and preserving their voices while we still have the opportunity. My condolences to all who knew and loved you. Your work mattered. Your life mattered. Your legacy remains. Rest in love. 🙏🏽🕊️
