A teenaged boy named Bob ran away from his enslaver at the height of the Civil War, headed toward the coast to freedom. He was caught and jailed in Onslow County. Sheriff Elijah Murrill advertised in a Raleigh newspaper for Samuel Marshborn to come get him.

In the 1860 census of Wilson, 57 year-old carpenter and lumber dealer Samuel Marshbourn reported owning $7350 in real estate and $25,540 in personal property, mostly in the form of enslaved people. In the slave schedule, he listed 18 enslaved people living in two dwellings — five men aged 25 to 65; one 7 year-old boy; six women aged 20 to 50; and six girls aged one month to 14 years.

My eyes widened when I read Onslow Co., NC, in the ad. I have suggested Black Murrill ancestors in Onslow Co. Also of interest, is the name Elijah Murrill! I haven’t followed the line closely ’cause there are at least two Elijah Murrills…a white Elijah (the sheriff) and a Black Elijah! Someday, I may try to see if one or both are related to me!
