In this series, which will post on occasional Wednesdays, I populate the landscape of Wilson County with imaginary “historical markers” commemorating people, places, and events significant to African-American history or culture.
We been here.
These South Pender Street apartment buildings are on the site where Wilson Colored Graded School stood for almost sixty years.
Built in 1890s to educate African American students in grades 1-8. Large wooden bldg. Later known as Sallie Barbour School; closed about 1950. Area still known as “the School Yard.”

YES!! Both my parents attended school here. My Mom who is still alive at 97yrs. has a vivid memory of how well dressed the teachers were , and she still recalls the very layout of the building!!
In the back of these apartments is Manchester St.- the street where my parents lived and raised their 7 children spanning 52yrs.
We must set up a Zoom call so I can interview your mom!!
..and yes, this group of apts., for many many years, was always referred to as ” the school yard”…now we know why. THANKS LISA!
