908 Wainwright Avenue, revisited.

After reading my latest post about Golden Rule Kindergarten, a mindful reader thought to go back some years in Google Maps to look for the old school building. Voilà! In the 1912 Google Street View, the small, gable-end structure can be seen at the end of the driveway behind Rev. Hattie Daniels‘ house at 908 Wainwright.

A big thanks to Kent Rogers!

  1. ABSOLUTELY the place where I learned discipline, manners, counting, and learning by singing everything in rhyme (it worked!!!)…and all things that I have become or want to be . That was the Golden Rule as taught by the Honorable Late Rev. Hattie Daniels (who was labeled as illiterate at some point- NOT) and her daughter, Deborah, who assisted us along our way . A closer look at the person who is sitting on the porch in this photo appears to be Deborah…always a watchful eye, often seen sitting on the porch waiting for the children as we walked up to the house to go to school ages 4-5, during my years, from “up the street and from around the corner”; she knew us all by name and would yell our names out each morning and say, ex., “come on in Judy Kay” . It was our neighborhood haven for learning …and eating (smile). THIS PLACE BLESSED ALL OF MY MOTHER’S and FATHER’S CHILDREN- all 7 of us. I remain GRATEFUL.
