B.W.A. Historical Marker Series, no. 21: Reid Street Community Center.

In this series, which will post on occasional Wednesdays, I populate the landscape of Wilson County with imaginary “historical markers” commemorating people, places, and events significant to African-American history or culture.

We been here.

REID STREET COMMUNITY CENTER

Dedicated Dec. 1938. Expanded in 1950s. Social and entertainment hub for 50+ years. Acclaimed swim team. Venue for nationally famed gospel, R&B, and soul acts.

  1. Ah, I loved this place which we called the Center. My siblings swam there. Our school St. Alphonsus was across the street — we were students in the 50’s.

  2. LEST WE FORGET.

Reid St. Center was IT for the African American community..and it was all good…clean, great staff that encouraged us, a place that was safe , and lots of great fun!

  3. Thanks Lisa. What are the chances we can get these BWA Markers be made Official? They hold so much of our history.
