In this series, which will post on occasional Wednesdays, I populate the landscape of Wilson County with imaginary “historical markers” commemorating people, places, and events significant to African-American history or culture.
We been here.
REID STREET COMMUNITY CENTER
Dedicated Dec. 1938. Expanded in 1950s. Social and entertainment hub for 50+ years. Acclaimed swim team. Venue for nationally famed gospel, R&B, and soul acts.

Ah, I loved this place which we called the Center. My siblings swam there. Our school St. Alphonsus was across the street — we were students in the 50’s.
LEST WE FORGET.
Reid St. Center was IT for the African American community..and it was all good…clean, great staff that encouraged us, a place that was safe , and lots of great fun!
Thanks Lisa. What are the chances we can get these BWA Markers be made Official? They hold so much of our history.
Great idea!!
I’ll help!
