On 20 February 1937, Rosco Applewhite, 22, of Wilson County, son of Mathew and Sophia Applewhite, married Mary Harris, 17, of Greene County, daughter of Ben and Bettie Harris, in Goldsboro, Wayne County, N.C.

In the 1940 census of Gardners township, Wilson County: Mathew Applewhite, 65; wife Sophia, 49; son Roscoe, 26; daughter-in-law Mildred, 21; daughter Elsie, 19; and son Nace, 16.

In 1940, Roscoe Applewhite registered for the World War II draft in Wilson. Per his registration card, he was born 15 April 1917 in Wilson; lived at R.F.D. #4, Wilson; his contact was his wife, Mrs. Roscoe Applewhite; and he farmed for Mark Ellis. The card is marked “Cancelled Died Dec 13th 1944.”
