Work inside Wilson Cotton Mills was generally reserved for white workers, many of whom lived in the company’s adjacent mill village. The cotton mill — demolished in 1977 — stood on what is now Layton Street, between South and Jones Streets, hard by the railroad. Wilson Iron Works now stands on the site, but many of the original mill cottages, built as early as 1896, remain on Cedar, Wayne, and Holly Streets. These streets are still tiny, betraying their early existence as alleys.
