Wilson Daily Times, 21 May 1933.
——
In the 1940 census of Wilson, Wilson County: at 919 Atlantic Avenue, owned and valued at $3000, Don[illegible] Hargroves, 35; wife Flora, 31; and daughter Geraldine, 15. D. Hargrove operated a barber shop in a pool room.
White Wilson police and NC Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) agents made these “fake “ arrests occasionally to meet NC ABC bootlegging quotas. At trial, a white man would vouch for the black liquor-house operator on trial. A fine would be paid, and the operator would be back doing business that evening.
Not to mention shakedowns, bribes, and selective enforcement.
Was Dan Hargrove related to Donald Hargrove?
The name is difficult to read in the 1940, but now that you ask, I believe this was Donald Hargrove.
