In the 1940 census of Wilson, Wilson County: at 919 Atlantic Avenue, owned and valued at $3000, Don[illegible] Hargroves, 35; wife Flora, 31; and daughter Geraldine, 15. D. Hargrove operated a barber shop in a pool room.

  1. White Wilson police and NC Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) agents made these “fake “ arrests occasionally to meet NC ABC bootlegging quotas. At trial, a white man would vouch for the black liquor-house operator on trial. A fine would be paid, and the operator would be back doing business that evening.
