In 1941, Wilson City Schools employed 58 African-American teachers at five schools — Darden High School, Sallie Barbour and Vick Elementary Schools, and Lane (just south of Wilson near present-day Wedgewood Golf Course) and Barnes (on what is now Airport Road) graded schools.
