Sgt. Darden reports from France.

During World War I, the Darden family shared a letter Sgt. Arthur N. Darden sent home from France. Darden described his selection as a “non-commissioned gas officer” training soldiers in “modern chemical warfare” — chlorine, phosgene, and mustard gas.
