Applewhite’s tenant houses.

Old Applewhite Farm Division

In 1918, the Atlantic Coast Realty Company commissioned this map of the “old Applewhite Farm” near Stantonsburg. Contentnea Creek runs along the western edge of much of the parcel, and a public road cuts across one end, creating a little pocket of land sandwiched between John Yelverton and Dr. S.H. Crocker’s holdings. The main dwelling faced the road near a ditch at a corner of the property. Across the way, encircled above, were the houses of Applewhite’s tenants, who were mostly (if not solely) African-American. Another cluster of tenant houses appears beyond a row of outbuildings on a farm road running parallel to the creek.

I have not been able to determine which Applewhite owned the property being subdivided, but based on a history of William H. Applewhite’s property, it does not appear to have been his.

  1. Hi Fam!, I have been researching my maternal Richardson line. My grandmother Vernell Richardson Glasper s parents are Frank Richardson and Mary Woodard. Frank Richardson‘s parents are John Richardson and Mollie Hagans . I have been trying to figure out how my mom‘s Richardson‘s are connected to the Halifax/warrenton(Saponi Natives) Richardson‘s. A genealogist researched and discovered that John Richardson, who would be my third great grandfather , his parents are Josiah married to a Juda and they were from Mark’s Creek Johnston County. They were enslaved by a William Richardson, whose father was an Apple white Richardson Jr and his father was an Applewhite Richardson (slave owners) by chance is this Applewhite a part of that family? Per the census records that she found they were still living near -probably sharecroppers~ next door to William Richardson in Mark’s Creek Johnson County. Thank you for any information that you may have. I really appreciate it. I’m having a hard time trying to find most of my third great grandparents. I’m missing about 10. My mom and dad share one common ancestor -maybe on multiple lines or two common ancestors as they are showing up as fourth or fifth cousins. I’ve been researching our family for the last six years and I just need someone to take a look at my Ancestry tree. I’m on Ancestry,my heritage, GEDmatch 23andme. I just need some fresh eyes… thank you so very much.
