Who was George Henderson? Or, perhaps, what was he?

There he is above in the 1930 census of Wilson, Wilson County. A physician with a general practice, he and his family lived in a house they owned at 713 Viola Street. Henderson was born about 1870 in North Carolina to Texas-born parents. His wife Roberta, born about 1892, was a deep-rooted North Carolina native. Their four children, with their approximate birth years, were James (1918), George (1921), Rosa Lee (1922), and Clistia (1924).

I have found two other references to the family. In the 1928 Wilson city directory:

But … laborer?

In the 1920 census of Tarboro township, Edgecombe County: farmer G.W. Henderson, 49, wife Roberta, 27, and children Julia, 9, James E., 2, and George E., 11 months. This appears to be the same family. Otherwise, I’ve found nothing else about George and Roberta Henderson.
