Studio shots, no. 210: Columbus E. Artis.

We’ve read about undertaker Columbus E. Artis here and here and here and elsewhere. John H.W. Baker left his studio to photograph Artis standing next to his gleaming 1941 Cadillac Series 61 sedan parked in the driveway of his home at 611 East Green Street.  Artis and first wife Ada D. Artis purchased the house from the Hardy Tate family in the 1930s, and he remained there the rest of his life. Though the photo is undated, the automobile’s license plate appears to be North Carolina’s yellow-on-black with lettering at top version from 1948.

  1. I remember visiting his home. If I’m not mistaken he and my grandfather were second cousins. My Daddy would take grandpa to see him. I was small but old enough to remember him and his sister Ms Lucinda. This is a nice picture
