I received a thoughtful letter from a former Grabneck and Daniel Hill resident expressing disappointment in my use of the colloquial term “‘hoods” to refer to African-American neighborhoods in Wilson and requesting that I adopt a different word. I intended no disrespect to these communities (of which I am a product), but my intent is less important than the impact of my language choice.
