“Negro”? I was born a Negro. (And learned to swim in an updated version of this very pool.) It was a neutral term in the era. There is much that is terrible about North Carolina’s past, and we should acknowledge that ugliness, recognize how it continues to resonate in the present, and work to reduce that harm, but I’m too rooted in North Carolina’s soil and people to hate it.
