This receipt related to the estate of Council Applewhite is found in the Henry Best (1867) estate file. On 1 January 1860, W.H.B. Taylor and Henry Best promised to pay $350 to Sarah Applewhite, guardian of Council Applewhite’s minor heirs, for the hire of “Boys Addison & Dock to work in South Carolina” for a year.
Addison Applewhite and Dock Applewhite were brothers, the sons of Obedience Applewhite. Neither was a “boy” in 1860, being about 25 and 29, respectively.
