Vick Cemetery was established in 1913. It featured no gateway, no neatly graveled lanes, no cultivated and manicured landscape. The families of its dead swept clean the areas around their loved ones’ graves and placed memorial plants like yucca, cedars, and daffodils at their heads. Without general maintenance, however, the constant fight to keep dog fennel and catbrier and weedy trees at bay eventually was lost and when the City turned its scant attention to Rest Haven, Vick faded into the woods.

In keeping with Lane Street Project’s aim to restore dignity to Vick (and her sister cemeteries), I commissioned a logo in a style that might have graced the letterhead of the cemetery keeper’s correspondence or receipts — had he ever been provided any.
