Lane Street Project: historic cemetery registration.

Last week, I registered Rountree, Odd Fellows, Vick, and Oakdale Cemeteries as historic cemeteries with North Carolina’s Office of State Archaeology, Division of Archives and History. Registration does not offer protection per se, but does guarantee their placement on state maps of sites of archaeological interest.

As an example, the form for Vick Cemetery:

The map showing state archaelogical sites is not yet available on-line.

  1. Hi Lisa!
I think this effort is remarkable! Is it possible to register the Ellis Cemetery on Nash Road and the Howard Cemetery (I don’t know where this is. All I know is that it’s somewhere in the suburbs and overgrown). Or can you direct me to how to do this?

By the way, I visited the exhibit at Imagination Station. Awesome!!!!

    1. I’m so glad you visited Say Their Names! I’ll add a link to the forms for registering sites. You’ll need to know their locations though. (I’ve been trying to figure out where Howard cemetery is for years!)

  2. Lisa, your efforts to honor all those deceased yet great African American souls in Wilson cemeteries , as listed in this post , are at the very least highly commendable and greatly appreciated!! One of the greatest things we can do is to remember those who came before us. Bestowed honor on our ancestors is a sign of a great leader and humble servant. THANK YOU for being both.
