Good Fishing Ground, Contentnea Creek, Wilson, N.C.
This undated postcard depicts several men (and perhaps one woman) on the banks of Contentnea Creek in Wilson County. One, at far left, appears to kneel in a pirogue. A closer look reveals that several, including the woman, are African-American.
My paternal grandmother’s 1910 handwritten yearbook/journal of her senior year mentions a party at C Creek. There was apparently an entire day of swimming, fishing, picnic meals and merrymaking for the senior class. I wonder what era this postcard is from and whether that is a tent in the background.
Wow. That certainly fits the scenario.
