The forty-sixth in a series of posts highlighting buildings in East Wilson Historic District, a national historic district located in Wilson, North Carolina. As originally approved, the district encompasses 858 contributing buildings and two contributing structures in a historically African-American section of Wilson. (A significant number have since been lost.) The district was developed between about 1890 to 1940 and includes notable examples of Queen Anne, Bungalow/American Craftsman, and Shotgun-style architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
As described in the nomination form for the East Wilson Historic District: “ca. 1922; 1 story; John Moore house; late example of double-pile hip-roofed form with projecting front wing; has classical porch posts; Moore was listed as both a barber and shoemaker.”
In the 1928 city directory of Wilson:
In the 1930 census of Wilson, Wilson County: John H. Moore, 45, cobbler in a shoe shop; wife Annie, 31, laundress; and children Lena, 11, Carl, 9, John, 7, Anna G., Odessia B., and Ruth, 1.
In 1940, Carl Moore registered for the World War II draft in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Per his registration card, he was born 23 January 1919 in Wilson; resided at 1113 Atlantic Street, Wilson (formerly 1516 North Opal Street, Philadelphia, and 1750 North Croskey Street, Philadelphia); his contact was mother Armincie Moore, 1113 East Atlanta [sic] Street, Wilson; and he was unemployed.

Armincie Cohen Moore died 1 July 1974 in Wilson. Per her death certificate, she was born 23 May 1899 to Willie Cohen and Sarah Eatmon; was a widow; and was a tobacco factory laborer. Informant was Vernesser Jones, 1113 Atlantic Street.

My great Aunt was Armencia Cone (Cohen) Moore. I have a picture of a funeral marked Feb 5 1935 for Sarah Coyne with this address. I believe it was transposed and should be Sarah Cone.
I have a picture of someone who died with the name Sarah Cone date Feb 5 1935. Trying to find out if this is my great grandmother.
Per death records, Sarah Cone died 5 February 1935. She was Armincia Cone Moore’s mother and the widow of Willis Cone. I have posted elsewhere in the blog about her brother and sister-in-law Jimerson and Cornelia Hagans Cone. What was your grandmother’s name? My grandfather’s name is Jimerson Cone. His father and mother were Willis and Sarah Cone.
I find many Sarah Cone but I am having problems tracing back to her birth which according to this death record was abt 1938. Can you tell from your research who was the informant for her.
I think many of the postings of Cornelia and Jimerson I already have pictures. I am interested in any postings about Willis and Sarah Cone. Also some of the records show different birth dates for Sarah. Not sure if these are the same persons or different.
Willie Cone was informant. Her death cert gives a birth year of about 1837, but I think the approximate date given in census records, about 1850, is much more likely. I don’t see anything to indicate that there was more than one Sarah Cone in Wilson County in this era.
Can you locate any newspapers articles of her death or an orbituary. I have pictures of her funeral with a lot of people in attendance. I am trying to find some type of write up.
Most people did not have obits, but I’ll certainly check newspaper databases I have access to.

This picture of my grandmothers (Armincie Moore) house in Wilson brings back many many memories. I have been trying to find out more family history, but many family members have passed away.
